Camp Enterprise will celebrate its 34th year in 2011, as Kansas City’s pre-eminent “Business Camp” overnighter for urban and suburban youth. Students are taught what it is like to operate a business, and are placed into diverse learning groups with business leaders from the Kansas City community. The Camp is located at Rotary Youth Camp, which is ACA accredited.

Two primary modalities are in place to train our youth. First, business leaders come to speak to our campers, all of whom are High School Juniors, and also to serve as “Discussion Leaders” or camp counselors. This permits the students to have direct contact with a diverse group of men and women who work in different businesses and professions in Greater Kansas City.

Second, every camper is placed in a discussion group that is designed to contain both urban and suburban students (students are not placed in groups with students from their own school). The task of each group is to constructively engage in a “live” business simulation provided and operated by Junior Achievement.

Some of the speakers who have committed to attend Camp Enterprise include Dr. Bernard Franklin (Metropolitan Community College), Carlos Gomez, President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, KCMO school district leaders, and Helzburg School of Business leaders.

The theme of the 2010 Camp Enterprise was “Doing Well While Doing Good.”

Other than intermural sports, Camp Enterprise is one of the few extended student functions in our community where youth of all backgrounds can co-mingle and learn from one another.
