Description:
Campers work individually and in groups in conjunction with professional, certified fencing instructors and volunteer staff to develop physical fitness in general and are introduced to the sport of Olympic-style fencing. A typical day begins at 9:00 a.m. with group warm up (basketball or soccer); stretching is then followed by three (3) kinds of drills essential to fencing: proper footwork (paying particular attention to balance), blade/weapon control (focusing on eye-hand coordination),and basic fencing maneuvers (introducing the competitive aspects of fencing, combining footwork, weapon control and strategy to create a recognizable action). Campers are placed in a group to practice actions, learn fencing courtesy and safety. Campers proceed to some bouting under the direction of staff. Later in the camp more emphasis is placed on bouting as a method of problem solving—to answer an opponent. Following bouting is a cool-down period with games and some analysis. At the end of the camp, campers are introduced to electronic-Olympic fencing.
Fencing is likened to “physical chess at the speed of boxing”. As a result, campers improve their mobility, coordination and problem solving skills, all while being exposed to a new sport and having fun. Campers should learn to analyze their opponent, decide which skills they want to utilize and achieve a positive outlook about themselves and respect for their fellow campers and opponents. Campers should also achieve a sense of dignity in being a part of 1,000 year tradition.
